3 Propane Supply Decisions for a Smoother Winter

Contracting propane is not the finish line for supply planning. It is the starting point.

With winter demand just weeks away, three decisions can determine whether your supply plan performs when it’s tested.

  1. Confirm your real volume: Your summer forecast is likely already outdated. Customer growth and demand shifts can create a gap between contracted gallons and actual peak requirements. That gap often gets filled with spot-market gallons, where pricing is least predictable. Compare current demand with contracted supply now.
  2. Secure transportation capacity: Contracted gallons only matter if you can move them. Reliable carriers are finalizing winter routes now. If demand has grown, confirm additional capacity before the strongest options are committed. Waiting can leave you with undelivered volume, paying a premium or rationing deliveries.
  3. Build supplier depth: When supply tightens, access can matter more than price. Backup supplier-negotiated lift arrangements and clear allocation terms can give you options when your primary source is constrained. Without them, additional gallons may not be available.

These details may sit outside the supply contract. However, they can determine whether that contract delivers when January arrives.

The Synergy Commodity team offers over 100 years of combined experience in procurement, price risk management and commodity markets. Synergy uses its team’s education and experience to improve outcomes for its clients.
