A Note from the Editor
We talk a lot about the value of homecare, but what do we really mean when we use the term “value-based care?” The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says it’s “designed to focus on quality of care, provider performance and the patient experience.” The shorthand often becomes: It’s about outcomes, not episodes or visits. And for payers, that may very well be the case.
But at a deeper level, it’s about putting patients and their individual health goals first, treating the whole person and understanding nonmedical barriers to their care. It’s something most homecare providers do instinctively.
That’s certainly the case with Bill Dombi, who will retire soon as president of the National Association for Homecare and Hospice. He has played a major role over the past 40 years in getting regulators and legislators to acknowledge the role homecare plays in providing valuable care—and he says we’re heading into a period of nearly unimaginable opportunities. You can read our “exit interview” with him starting on page 16, followed by our cover series diving into how to make value-based care work for your organization, whether you’re in home health, home medical equipment or another aspect of this industry that is expanding so quickly.
Did you know that HomeCare is growing, too? We’ve started sending out our newsletter, HomeCare Now, five times a week—make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss any breaking industry info! And to help us stay on top of everything you need to know, we’ve added a new member to the team: Associate Editor Juliana Frederick. Help us welcome her aboard!
As always, thanks for reading!
