Ask the tots in any preschool class what they want to be when they grow up, and at least one student will shout, “Firefighter!” or “Police officer!” Even at that tender age, these kids know heroes when they see them.
Planned, purposeful, and meaningful recognition of the public servants who support our communities is vital to keeping the pipeline of these vocations full, and the engagement of these professionals strong. And on Oct. 28, National First Responders Day, it’s the perfect opportunity to answer the call to recognize police officers, firefighters, and EMS professionals.

Common award types
Within each profession are many specialty awards, but some of the most universally recognized are:
- Medal of valor: The highest decoration for bravery, this is presented to an individual who demonstrates exceptional courage, heroism, and selflessness amid danger while in the line of duty.
- Life saving award: Recognizes a first responder who acts quickly in an emergency to perform a heroic act that directly contributes to saving or preserving a person’s life.
- Meritorious service award: Honors outstanding accomplishments that go above and beyond the call of duty, making a meaningful impact on the community or the department.
- Officer of the year/firefighter of the year/paramedic of the year: Applauds the exceptional professionalism, performance, and dedication that sets an individual apart. Recipients embody what exemplary service and commitment look like within the profession.
- Distinguished service award: Presented to those who have made significant, lasting contributions to their department, colleagues, and the communities they serve.
- Rookie of the year: Celebrates someone new to the profession or the department who has shown remarkable initiative, performance, professionalism, dedication, and commitment early in their career.
- Volunteer of the year: Spotlights a reserve officer, volunteer firefighter, or emergency medical professional reserve officer whose extraordinary contributions have made a noteworthy and meaningful difference.
- Milestone anniversaries/years of service/lifetime service award: Recognizes dedication and commitment to public service at employment milestones like five, 10, 20 or 30 years or more.
- Retirements: Honors the conclusion of a distinguished career — and all the courageous accomplishments and acts of service they contributed from their first day to their final call.
- End of watch tributes: Pay respect to first responders who have passed away, especially those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
