Brownmed
Physician and surgeon Ivan E. Brown Sr. launched Brown Manufacturing in 1965 after receiving a U.S. patent for his invention, the Plastalume Finger Splint. When sales of this new product increased, Dr. Brown moved operations from a work room in his basement to a small building behind his home. Under the leadership of his son, Ivan E. Brown Jr., the company continued to expand. The Seal-Tight Cast and Bandage Protector, introduced in 1989, was instrumental in the evolution of Brownmed, as the product’s success resulted in considerable sales and employment growth—and the need for increased manufacturing space. In fact, Seal-Tight has grown to become the No. 1 selling brand of cast and bandage protector with a category leading guarantee and more than 25 years as market leader.
Through consistent innovation, Brownmed has continued to bring new brands and categories of products to market for more than 50 years. This is accomplished by starting with a patient-centered design process to develop products that work, are easy to use and are comfortable to wear. The result is a high-quality product and improved patient compliance, which in turn creates improved product efficacy. That efficacy enhances patient and customer satisfaction and reinforces the value of the patient-centric design process.
From established brands like Seal-Tight cast protectors and Plastalume Splints to IMAK Compression, with seven products commended for their ease of use by the Arthritis Foundation and designed for all-day comfort, their goal is to bring new products to market that improve lives and help overcome obstacles. To that end, more recent additions like Intellinetix Wearable Vibration Therapy and Spark Kinesiology Sleeves have demonstrated Brownmed’s expertise in the performance health category as well.
One of their newest products, the Intellinetix Heat and Vibration Therapy Wrap, combines the proven power of vibration therapy with heat therapy through the use of a Heated Hub that allows users to seamlessly toggle between heat and vibration therapy.
This functionality of Intellinetix puts the power of relief in the hands of the consumer like never before and enhances the benefits of these forms of therapy. The many benefits include enhanced pain relief targeting muscles from the back to aching joints, improved joint flexibility and range of motion, reduced inflammation, and faster muscle recovery, all customized to the consumers’ needs and targeted to the specific area of concern.
Today, Brownmed employs more than 70 people and manufactures and sells more than 130 different products to a worldwide market. Their executive office in Boston connects their research and development efforts to the most robust med-tech market in the world. And their 81,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Spirit Lake, Iowa, gives them the flexibility to manufacture, ship and distribute to customers of any size. Brownmed has been awarded 57 patents, has 11 pending with United States Patent Office, and is a six-time recipient of the Inc. 5000 award as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States.
From lower extremity to upper extremity to sleep therapy and ergonomic support, Brownmed has you covered. Learn more at www.brownmed.com.
Proactive Medical Products
Even though Proactive Medical Products was named to the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. two years in a row, Co-Founder and CEO Brian Goldstein is adamant about keeping his company nimble.
“Unlike much larger competitors who are often slow to respond, Proactive can react in the moment to a customer’s urgent needs,” Goldstein said. “Our dedicated team can do things other companies simply can’t do in a timely and efficient manner. This is what sets us apart from the field.”
Located in New York and Florida, the company continues to grow at a rapid pace. They have just moved their headquarters into a new 30,000-square-foot facility. Proactive now has over 100,000 square feet of warehousing and will continue to expand to meet customers’ needs.
Proactive is proud to announce the launch of their new “Protopia” series of ultra-low and expandable long-term care beds.
“Since we are the largest and most cost-effective manufacturer of medical mattresses in the U.S., it made perfect sense to expand our basic Homecare Bed line to include the Protopia Series,” Goldstein said.
The introduction of the Protopia bed series comes one year after Proactive’s entry into the durable medical equipment (DME) arena, which included wheelchairs (K2, K3, K4, K5, K7), reclining, transport and pediatrics, universal wheelchair parts, semi electric, full electric and bariatric homecare beds, walkers and rollators.
“These new products complement our current wide range of products, which include low air loss and alternating pressure air mattresses, pressure redistribution foam mattresses, positioning and pressure redistribution wheelchair cushions, electric and hydraulic lifts, mobility devices, respiratory products, fall mitigation/prevention, patient wandering and noninvasive diagnostic products,” Goldstein said.
Goldstein’s philosophy is simple: The customer is always right.
“It sounds so cliché,” he said, “but it is the only way the Proactive team knows how to work. If a customer is having an issue with a product, we don’t really ask any questions. We’ll ship something overnight. Ask questions later, if necessary, but just take care of that customer.”
Another reason customers are attracted to Proactive is the company’s affordable and efficient custom product program, as their expertise allows them to manufacture most of their products in unlimited sizes, styles and configurations.
“When it comes to cushions or mattresses, if somebody needs one extra high, extra-long, we’re the only company out there that can do that,” Goldstein said. “And unlike others, we don’t overcharge our customers and our turnaround time is lightning fast.”
Proactive also offers container direct and private label programs for their larger customers. The company relies on their trusted network of distributors.
“Let’s say one of our distributors is dealing with a nursing home, and the nursing home administrator needs help troubleshooting or training on one of our products,” Goldstein said. “We take care of it pronto. We always satisfy the customer, even if it costs us money. And that’s going to come back to us, as people will talk about what great customer service they received.”
Proactive encourages customers to take advantage of their product knowledge, including their expertise with private label products. For more information on how to become part of the Proactive family, contact Goldstein and his team at Proactive Medical Products.

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
Fisher & Paykel Healthcare is a leading designer and manufacturer of products and systems for use in respiratory care, acute care and the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Fisher & Paykel products and systems are sold in more than 120 countries worldwide. Fisher & Paykel CPAP masks deliver consistent sealing performance, while being comfortable for patients. F&P Solo, F&P Evora Full, F&P Evora Nasal and F&P Vitera are the leading Fisher & Paykel masks, trusted by sleep physicians and respiratory therapists and used by millions of patients all over the world.
Their latest mask, F&P Solo, combines years of relentless innovation and cutting-edge components to usher in a new era of CPAP masks. F&P Solo is one mask with two comfortable cushion options. It is compatible with both nasal and nasal pillow cushions that can be interchanged to suit the patient’s preference.
F&P Solo is the world’s first AutoFit mask and simplifies setup like no other using AutoLock technology. Patients stretch the mask over their head and onto their face, then adjust into place with one touch. AutoLock technology then automatically holds the mask in place, dynamically responding to sleep movement and CPAP-therapy pressure. Without conventional straps to undo and pull, the mask reduces overtightening. This helps users set themselves up without assistance and then easily finetune the mask during nightly use.
The F&P myMask App now offers mask selection and sizing in addition to the existing step-by-step education and support video content.
Now health care professionals and patients alike can easily “select, size and assist” conveniently in person or do so remotely via a simple text invitation to a patient’s smartphone. The new selection and sizing tools have been designed to complement the existing myMask App support offering, to help increase confidence, the efficiency of mask use and compliance.
Without the need to use conventional physical sizing guides, the myMask App is designed to reduce the time compared to traditional invasive sizing. The new feature offers consistent selection and sizing standards, regardless of which mask or which personnel is using the myMask App. Physicians and clinicians can have confidence in better understanding their patients to support the mask selection and accurately selecting the best size for them.
