In 1902, Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing & Publishing Company needed a system to control the humidity in their factory to prevent paper from soaking up moisture and expanding. As a result, Willis Carrier created the world’s first air conditioning unit. His invention was able to control the temperature, humidity and air circulation, while also cleaning the air. It worked by pulling in air through a filter, passing the air over coils filled with coolant and then venting the cooled and dehumidified air back out.
