Raising the Standard in Wastewater Sampling

In the challenging world of wastewater management, accuracy and reliability are not optional—they are critical. While vacuum-powered samplers have long been the trusted standard across Europe, many U.S. municipalities and industrial facilities have continued to struggle with outdated peristaltic samplers plagued by tubing wear, inconsistent sample volumes and high maintenance costs. That is why Emerald Coast Manufacturing developed the WAVE Automatic Vacuum Sampler—a true gamechanger in the U.S. market that is redefining how municipalities and industrial facilities collect representative samples.

Based on Florida’s Emerald Coast, Emerald Coast Manufacturing is a specialized manufacturer focused exclusively on advanced sampling solutions for the water and wastewater industry. The company’s mission is straightforward: Deliver equipment that works reliably in the harshest real-world conditions while dramatically reducing the time and money facilities spend on upkeep.

Unlike traditional peristaltic pumps, the WAVE uses patented vacuum technology powered by a heavy-duty diaphragm pump. This design delivers exceptional precision—±3% accuracy and less than 1% repeatability—with fully programmable sample sizes from 20 to 500 milliliters (mL) in 1 mL increments. The system handles vertical lifts up to 29 feet and horizontal runs up to 200 feet, exceeding 3.75 feet per second and easily surpassing EPA guidelines for representative sampling.

Load Controls

Since 1983, Load Controls has been providing power monitoring solutions for chemical processing, pharmaceutical, food processing, paper, waste treatment, machine tool and other process manufacturing applications. Its sensors and controls are in use by nine of the 10 world’s largest chemical processing firms, and nine of the 10 largest pharmaceutical companies globally.

Load Controls measures the power load on motors and pumps, enabling optimized production processes, protection against costly pump failures and improved preventative maintenance programs.

By measuring load in pumps (in watts or horsepower), the company is able to draw a straight line between power and liquid pumped. This information can be critical in knowing:

  • The difference between a lightly loaded process and a dry running pump that may lead to overheating, failure and expensive replacement or cleanup costs
  • Overload caused by a jam or underload caused by a broken impeller
  • Excessive mechanical contact or rubbing indicating a potential maintenance issue
  • Energy usage trends over time and expensive oversizing of pump motors

The compact PMP-25 Digital Load Control provides an efficient solution that prevents damage to pumps caused by overload, jamming, loss of load and dry running. The rugged enclosure is small enough to fit in size-one starters and can be door-, panel- or wall-mounted. The unit is easy to install and displays true power on a

large LED display. Both high and low power trip relays, with adjustable startup delay and individual trip timers, are standard features. The low power trip, when used to detect dry running, cavitation or loss of prime, is up to 10 times more sensitive than conventional current relays. The high-power trip can detect problems such as overloads, jammed impellers, bad bearings or blocked outlets. The PMP-25 will protect pumps of all types, including sealless or magnetic drive, centrifugal, positive displacement, process and sewage pumps.

All Load Controls products are manufactured in the U.S. The company is ISO 9001 and B Corporation certified. Now a part of the Industrial Control Solutions family, partnered with Whitman Controls, Thomas Products and Duro-Sense for users’ flow, level, pressure, vacuum or thermocouple switch/sensor needs.

Titan Flow Control, Inc.

Titan Flow Control, Inc. was founded in 2000 by a group of industry veterans who set out to fix a familiar problem in the flow control market: Users needed parts faster than most manufacturers were willing to ship them. A quarter century later, the company is headquartered in Lumberton, North Carolina, just off Interstate 95, and runs three additional locations totaling more than 180,000 square feet of manufacturing, fabrication and warehouse space, including a recently added 68,000-square-foot facility. The management team brings more than 400 years of combined pipeline industry experience, and roughly a third of the office staff hold engineering degrees.

Titan manufactures a comprehensive range of pipeline products: Y-strainers, basket strainers, duplex strainers and fabricated strainers; double-disc check valves; globe and silent check valves; soft-seated butterfly valves; triple-duty valves; suction diffusers; and the straining elements that go inside them. The catalog covers both premium imported options and solutions built for fully domestic requirements, serving industrial, commercial, marine and fire protection markets. NSF-certified options are available for potable water, and the Underwriters Laboratories (UL)-listed Fire-Line series meets NFPA requirements. Titan is also an ASME code-certified shop, fabricating custom strainers, orifice plates and one-off configurations to user drawings. Every component is sourced from certified vendors and inspected upon arrival; carbon, stainless and alloy castings carry foundry heat numbers for traceability; parts are precision-machined on computer-controlled equipment in accordance with ANSI/ASME, API, NACE and ISO standards. Every unit is 100% hydrostatically tested per ANSI, API, MSS and user specifications.

The thing distributors and specifying engineers come back for is delivery. Titan carries over $20 million in active stock across valve bodies, strainers and fabricated assemblies, backed by an in-house screen and basket shop producing perforated and wire mesh elements from 20 to 500 mesh in materials including 304 and 316 stainless, Monel, Alloy 20 and Hastelloy. Most standard strainer models ship the next day. Replacement screens and baskets, including those built to fit competitors’ housings, often leave the dock the same week a pipeline goes down. In an industry where downtime can exceed millions of dollars a day, that matters.

Warrender

Warrender, Ltd. specializes in sealless magnetic pumps for leak-free pumping with process versatility, featuring separate pump ends, magnet couplings and totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) motors.

Warrender mag-drive pumps are used in chemical, pharmaceutical, oil and gas and industrial refrigeration processes. Advanced technology and heavy-duty construction provide safety and reliability while meeting Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) zero emissions regulations. Designs include ANSI-B73.1, ISO-2858 and API-685 centrifugals, high pressure, high temperature, low net positive suction head (NPSH) and low flow/high head turbines.

Chemical Pump Standards

Conceptually similar to ANSI-B73.1, the ISO-2858 standard provides dimensional and performance interchangeability, with broad hydraulic coverage and intermediate sizes. Optimized efficiencies, lower suction speeds (Nss values) and enclosed impellers are preferred for sealless designs.

Centrifugal Pump Flow Range

Centrifugal pumps are designed for moderate to high flows. A general industry flow guideline, based on the best efficiency point (BEP), is +10% to the right and -20% to the left. This range ensures optimal hydraulic efficiencies and prevents both runout and high head cavitation. This range is expandable, depending on pump design features and process conditions.

Low Flow, High Head

Warrender regenerative turbine mag-drive pumps address low-flow/high-head applications for continuous, leak-free operation, as variations in head calculations have minimal effect on flow. Turbine pumps complement centrifugal designs in low-flow systems. Self-balancing impellers eliminate axial thrust loads and withstand entrained vapor up to 20%. Suction strainers for turbine pumps are recommended if solid particulates are present and for startup debris.

Rise to Shutoff & Flow Control

Turbine pumps have an extremely high rise to shutoff, accommodating varying head conditions. Turbine pumps are dynamic in design, with a fixed displacement, allowing for flow control without bypass lines or relief valves.

Sealless Pump Heat Induction Sources

The primary source of heat from alloy sealless pumps is totally enclosed liquid-cooled (TELC) windings in canned motor pumps, which often require auxiliary bypass lines and controls to release flashing liquid. Warrender mag-drive pumps employ fan-cooled motors to minimize heat induction. Eddy current losses for canned motor pumps (liners) and alloy mag-drive (rear casings) diminish exponentially with speed, and therefore, VFD controls offer rapid return on investment for energy savings.
