With the success of the Artemis II lunar flight, global interest in space exploration is higher than it has been in decades. But what’s next? According to NASA, one goal is to establish a sustainable habitat on the moon, and wastewater treatment technology may play a key role in attaining that reality.

Scientists at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center recently developed the Divergent Deployable Wastewater Treatment Facility (DDWTF), a system designed to sustainably transform crew wastewater into usable resources such as nutrient feedstocks for plants and biomanufacturing. Because different types of wastewater contain different compounds, the system has been built to keep waste streams separate, allowing hygiene water, laundry water, human waste, food waste, etc., to be sorted into individual streams. The streams are then fed into one of three specialized bioreactors and treated for the most appropriate use. If successful, the DDWTF could have a huge impact both on the future of sustained space exploration and the way wastewater is handled here on Earth.

As NASA sets its sights on new frontiers and innovations, Pumps & Systems, too, has been embracing the future with a completely updated website and new, streamlined design for our digital edition. Both of these revamps were done in the interest of making our content more visually engaging and easier to navigate, and we hope you enjoy the fresh look! We will also be including our annual workforce survey results as a digital exclusive in Pump Users Digest this year, so be on the lookout for that email to learn more about what those in the industry have to say about AI, current events and more.

The technology of the future would not be possible without the innovators of yesterday and today, and this issue celebrates their contributions. To learn more about some of the current trailblazers in the pumps industry, visit our Corporate Capabilities section, starting on page 15. For inspiring tales of hard work and perseverance over decades of service, visit our Industry Veterans of the Year section, starting on page 10.

Also in this issue is a column by Jim Elsey exploring the impact of centrifugal pump speed on flow rate (page 6); a look at perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) regulations and what utilities can do to prepare (page 51); a guide to managing pump curve uncertainty by columnist Sotirios Christofi (page 9); and an exploration of how stationary bypass pumps can help lift stations prepare for severe weather events (page 54).

As always, thanks for reading.
